FUNCHAL, MADEIRAAfter refuelling in Marina da Quinta do Lorde we made it to Funchal, the capital of Madeira, in 3,5 hours. We anchored outside the city, close to Trim1, the catamaran we met in Porto Santo. Glenda and John came to greet us in their dinghy and we soon realized it would be a nightmare to spend the night with the rough swells and wind. We decided to invest in a couple of nights in the marina and got a strange spot next to two sailing boats we had to climb over to get ashore. On day 2 we hopped on a double decker hop-on/hop-off bus to check out the island. Our first stop was Pico dos Barcelos, a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Funchal and the Atlantic. From here we headed south to Câmara de Lobos bay, very popular with Winston Churchills and too many tourists. It was a lovely harbour, especially after a glass of cool rosé wine at Pier One Restaurant Grill Terrace overlooking the bay. Back in Funchal we met up with the Trim1 crew and gave them our 24 hr. bus tickets so they could also have the pleasure of exploring the island. We had dinner together, finally having a meal where we didn´t have to hold on to our plates. We parted that night being certain we would see each other again. On day 3 we strolled through Santa Catarina Park and ended up way up the hills to look for a carbon brush for the boat. We are having problems with the autopilot which makes sailing a bit tiresome. Unsuccesful we headed back down again, passing beautiful houses with tropical plants, and the Norwegian Honorary Consulate.
